Star Wars: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back: Widescreen Limited Edition

Region 1

Released: 9/12/2006

Anamorphic 2.35:1

Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi: Widescreen Limited Edition

Region 1

Released: 9/12/2006

Anamorphic 2.35:1

When I updated today, these titles had disc id profiles listed under the box set contents. But are these box sets? the only thing I could think of that would make these 'box sets' would be the fact that the second bonus disc (pretty sure its labeled as a bonus disc) contains the original theatrical versions.

Is this putting it into a situation similar to the 4 Disc Ben-Hur set, where it has an option child profile for the other version (though Ben-Hur is a different film, not just a different edit) yet the main box set profile still contains all the information that a normal profile would unlike true box sets?

If that is the case, doesn't that open up setting up any movie that contains more than one version (edit, ie theatrical and directors cuts) on seperate discs as a box set? I thought there was an exception in the rules for bonus movies but I couldn't find it (I thought this was what made Ben-Hur a 'box set')

These should be profiled as Main Feature (Parent) and Bonus Cut of film (Child profile) if one wants. Otherwise, only the disc one movie should be profiled under the main profile.

To be honest it would never have occurred to me to profile these releases like that. But I agree with NewEnglander, if someone really wants to then yes: main profile - main film, child profile - bonus film.
The rule about bonus films is at the bottom of the Disc Features page.

My approach is: If it's the same movie, just a different "cut" version then no, it's not a box set.

I have some of these: SW Episode 4, 5 and 6; Superman 1 and 2 (both normal and Richard Donner Cut).

I also have a copy of Independence Day that has theatrical and extended cut on the same disc via seamless branching.

Quoting Rules:
Quote:
Examples of valid Other Features:

  • Indications for multiple versions of a film

  • So, if there's just another version of the same film, there's no need to create an extra profile with more or less the same information except for maybe different audio tracks, cast and crew, which can separated with an empty line and divider.

No, the main profile should only describe the main feature except for the "other feature field". Therefore the audio section as well as the credit section should only describe the "main" feature and not the "bonus" feature. Unfortunately, it is sometimes difficult to decide what's the main feature and what's the bonus feature(s).

If we deal with episodic data (tv series etc.) the situation would be different of course (handling audio and credits).

Personally I have setup the new 5 disc Blade ruinner set as a boxset. This has been argued as a single film with some extras but I wanted to be able to track the different sound & video versions.

There are slight differences in the cast, especially the first film.

In the original version of Star Wars, the following are credited as such.

David Prowse as Lord Darth Vader
James Earl Jones as Lord Darth Vader (uncredited, voice)

    In the Special Edition:
    David Prowse as Darth Vader
James Earl Jones as Darth Vader (voice)

Then of course you have the Special Edition crew in the Special Edition versions.

There may be other slight differences between the original version & the Special Edition too.

So like Blade Runner, I think these should be treated as a box set. Even though they are the same film, there are slight differences in the roles and crew between the OV and SE.

As have been suggested before the differences between the credits do not necessarily ask for a box set. The main profile bonus profile approach (aka Ben-Hur set up) will serve this purpose well enough and is a base for those who want to have a box set as well as those who want a single profile in their local database.

We're already using dividers for special edition cast and crew in some profiles. This seems like it could be handled the same way.

They have been treated as boxsets for those that are interested in them, largely due to capturing the diffrences in the "original" theatrical release versus the Special Edition, most notably runtime, video data and audio data.

Hey, I did not know this!   I think I will "solve" this locally by placing "Lord" and "uncredited" between square brackets.

Except that dividers are only available in the Cast and Crew section.  If you want to track other data like video and audio you'll have to have separate profiles.  That's why the Ben Hur example makes sense to me.

I understand the Ben-Hur set, and use the child profile for that. Like northbloke said, profiling this set like that never occurred to me which is why i questioned it when I saw the disc id profiles were attached. Also, it doesn't appear that Episode IV is done like this, just Episodes V & VI.

I didn't realize that the credits were changed, apart from the addition of the special edition crew, so basically viewed this as two cuts of the movie albeit on different discs (the 'bonus' version (original theatrical) being the one I personally prefer). That being said, based on CubbyUps' comments, I find it interesting that the first movie doesn't have this same setup going for it.

I also agree that doing it this way lets those that want to do it like that have the profiles, and those that don't can just ignore the second profile. I can also see doing the Blade Runner this way as well, though both of these seem to not be true box sets in my opinion because each film in the set is the same (just different cuts) and I think this bonus film rule (knew I saw it in the rules somewhere, thanks for pointing it out northbloke) is a good compromise as to how to handle it and give everyone what they want.
