Just came across this credit on Lord of Illusions (027616629425)

I could argue either side of this.
Rules don't address it, what does everyone else think/feel?

Here's a screengrab to help you decide:

For what it's worth, existing is "writer".

I would enter it as Screenwriter.  For me, 'Written for the screen' is not the same as 'Written by'.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

So the old rule that a Screenwriter credit in DVDP can only be used in combination with an Original Material By credit (so only if it's adapted from another medium) no longer applies?

As I recall, this used to be in the Contribution Rules, but this is no longer the case. Correct?

That note was removed, which is a good thing since it wasn't always the case that one would find a screenwriter credit with an OMB credit. Occasionally the OMB isn't listed. I think that's the case with 2001: A Space Odyssey and I know I've seen other instances of it.

Ironicly, while it is credited on screen as your first example, in reality it's probably closer to the second.  I can't recall if this was based on one of the Books of Blood stories or is a whole new story just for the movie, been too long since reading those. There are no other writing credits, so I know it is all Barker's and either way would be original story and written for the screen by him.

If I remember rightly the character Harry d'Amour is an existing character from Clive Barker's books but the story of Lord of Illusions was original to the film.

Agreed
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I would also use Screenwriter, since "Written for the Screen," usually means that the writer adapted it from another medium, such as a book or play. In the those cases we would use Screenwriter. I just think of "Written for the Screen" as a fancy term for Screenwriter, that someone in Hollywood came up with. As Skip would say, "You've gotta love Hollywood."

In that case I would enter him as written by, because I rather see an entry that gives me the complete information than just a part of it.
