Really? I thought the grandson would become "the Third". | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | You are right Karsten... it would be the third... I know... my eldest brother is the third in our family. Has nothing to do with the fact my grandfather and father already past away... don't change the suffix in his name. | | | Pete |

My grandpa was Sr., my dad was Jr. On the other hand my grandpa was Peter IV and my dad Peter V. You see, these are 2 different pairs of shoes. | | | regards, Mad -

| Posted: | | | | I don't know... maybe it is a regional thing... but I never heard of the suffix changing once someone dies. I know at least in this area once a Sr. always a Sr. Once a Jr. always a Jr. and once a 3rd always a 3rd.... and so on. | | | Pete |

Sold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but as Enry noted i don't think it will stop users such as rho from still trying to submit their preference. Sorry, Rho, that's the way i see it, I don't see you arguing from any point of logic, I see you simply trying to argue what you want to do and how YOU want to do it.
Skip If you would have read my previous post in thread, you would know better. |

Quote: ... Are you really going to contribute ["Robert Jr.//Downey" as credited as "Robert Downey, Jr."] ? personally I would omit the Jr./Sr. part completely out of the name-section (except it's really a name -> documentation needed), because it's not a real part of his name. When his dad dies and he got a son named "Robert John" as well, then he is the Sr. and his son is the Jr.. so I would prefer to enter ["Robert//Downey" or "Robert/John/Downey" maybe in addition with BY=1965 if needed, credited as "Robert Downey, Jr."] Of course Jr. is a suffix, and is part of the credits. We contribute credits, not "real names". That's why the "real life" rules for names don't always apply in ProfillerWorld | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

| Posted: | | | | Jr. Sr. Sir Admiral...are all name pre- or suffixes. but they are no part of the parts the Profiler wants/forced us to split into (-> "first name", "middle name", "last name"). To diagnose it with you own they are just pre-/suffixes e.g. the only logical way to enter the credit "President of the United States John F. Kennedy" into the DB could be "John/F./Kennedy" credited as "President........Kennedy" | | | regards, Mad -

Sounds reasonable to me. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Still, it's John junior, not Smith junior. Correct. "Robert John, Jr." to be totally correct with the example of Mr. Downey But as I said, personally I wouldn't enter pre/suffixes at all. So "Robert//Downey" credited as [Robert Downey, Jr.] | | | regards, Mad -

Sounds reasonable to me. that's the idea, right. Because "Sir", "Jr.", "Sgt." is no part of "First Name", "Middle Name" or "Last Name" | | | regards, Mad -

However, I know for sure what we do with suffixes. If the most common credit includes ", Jr.", that suffix will be present in the Common Name too, in the "Last Name" field. We are using the "Last Name" for something that is not even a name, let alone the Family Name! | | | -- Enry | | | Last edited: by White Pongo, Jr. |

Sounds reasonable to me. Nah. Let's stick to the credits. | | | -- Enry |

| Posted: | | | | I don't want to enter the debate again, but I have to point something out... As the poll currently stands, 27 people favor some form of 'Chow Yun-Fat', while 12 favor 'Yun-Fat//Chow'. That's, roughly, 2 to 1 against reversing the name. Is the "we can decide amongst ourselves what the best way is" crowd going to accept that or are they going to continue to argue in favor of their prefered method? Live by the sword, die by the sword, right? | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | I'm more than happy to accept Chow//Yun Fat, but the problem is not that we can't agree, but that the standard isn't in the rules. You also have the problem of mixing given and family names in the same field - not an issue for me, but others have objected to this. Basically, until there is something in the rules that states that the name fields either refer purely to the order on screen or that first=given etc, this argument will never end! |

For me, I read 15 for Chow//Yun-Fat, 10 for Chow/Yun/Fat, 2 for Chow//Yun Fat and 12 for Yun-Fat//Chow. We have a coherent third that seem to know how to handle asian names in true life, and about two third who prefer rules to true life, but cannot agree ( about 50/50) about the way to parse a three part name. If the 27 people in favor of "Chow Yun(-?)Fat" were able to explain which part of the rules they use to choose between the three possibilities, you perhaps could play this game... | | | Images from movies | | | Last edited: by surfeur51 |
