| Posted: | | | | Okay, here's the problem with this. The * is a textual referencing tool and it is denoting a footnote or endnote. By including the * in the Overview that is therefore referencing the footnote in question. By referencing it, you are now making it part of the Overview and therefore it should be included if the * itself is included. There is nothing in the rules that says "Do not include footnotes if they are included in the Overview". Rules say: Quote:
Never include the following items in overviews:
-Taglines -Reviews (unless they are incorporated into the text of the overview on the case) -Extra features -Hyperlinks or other HTML No mention of footnotes or endnotes. Personally, I think the * and the footnote should be left out as it adds nothing to the Overview which is supposed to describe the movie itself. But if you're going to include the * then I think you have no other choice but to include the actual footnote itself. It means something contextually to the Overview and including the * with no reference to why it's there does not make much sense to me. -edit- Okay, so I guess I shouldn't leave a post half done to take a phone call and then finish it later and not realize everything was resolved. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams | | | Last edited: by Vega |

| Posted: | | | | I did not want to start all this controversy about his ... just wanted to be sure I was voting for it properly.
If the (*) has to be in because of the rules and it does not really specify that the footnote should be added ... then it can probably be left out.
I just wanted to be sure I was doing the right thing in my vote ... nothing more ... nothing less.
Sorry if this has caused any problems. | Posted: | | | | I think I'd have to agree with Hal and Vega. The asterisk and the footnote are connected, so it's either both in or both out.
Personally I would rather see them both omitted, but I can see the argument that the asterisk is part of the overview and therefore should be included. Either way is acceptable to me. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

The problem with this line of thinking is that it's much easier to list the things not to be included in the Overview then it is to list the things that are. The rules specifically list 4 things not to be included in the Overview and footnotes are not on that list. I personally don't agree with it, but as written that would mean we are supposed to include them. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

I agree with Hal, Vega and Gunnar. I personally leave them out but wouldn't object to both being there. A rule that is perceived by some to force us to include asterisks without the object to which they refer is a rule that needs clarification. | | | ...James

I do not disagree with what you are saying ... but wouldn't it be easier to say what SHOULD be in the overview ... rather then what SHOULD NOT be in it. I have always found over the years that it is easier to have someone tell you what they want to see in something then to have you try to figure out if what you are not seeing is okay to include? Just seems to me that it might be easier if we were to include that in the rules ... rather then have people try to figure out if it is okay or not. Just a thought ... . P.S. By the way ... I voted YES to the new contribution that DID include the foot note . | | | Antec Nine Hundred case, 4GB A-Data DDR2 800 RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 Conroe 2.66GHz, ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP MB, XFX GeForce 8600GT XXX 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 video card, ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink, Seagate Barracuda 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s HDD, Zerodba 620W PSU, LITE-ON 20X DVD±R DVD with LightScribe SATA, Samsung CDDVDW SH-S203B SATA, Hanns-G HH281 28" monitor, Kodak ESP3250 printer, Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers, Windows 7 Professional | | | Last edited: by mwkirchner |
