And original title

JAG

as seen on screen?

Slightly off-topic, but I'll mention it anyway: note that with original titles for TV-seasons, you do still need to keep the season indicator as part of the title. Else, those that choose to display their collection by original title (one of the basic display options) will end up with multiple profiles all named just "JAG" and nothing more, which is rather confusing.

Yes, of course.

Once again based on the rules, some of the options listed are INVALID choices.

The title for a Box Set should be the title listed on the Front Cover; for example The Andy Griffith Show.  Season indicators, if listed on the cover, should be entered as part of the title, not the description.  e.g. Angel: The Complete First Season.

While it might be confusing, to have the original title read 'JAG', anything else is against the rules.  The rules say to "Use the title from the film's credits."  If the season indicator is not shown in the credits, it can NOT be entered...at least it can't if you are following the rules.

This is the first time I run into thus US->US thingy.

But as far as it goes to US shows and non-english speaking languages it's always been this way:

T: Hör mal, wer da hämmert: Die komplette erste Staffel
OT: Home Improvement: The Complete First Season

or

T: Smallville: Die komplette erste Staffel
OT: Smallville: The Complete First Season

Contributed, voted upon and approved by a lot of different people.

I don't say it's within the rules or against it I just say it's the way we've been doing it "over here".

Here are some topics about it: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=original+title+season+indicator+site%3Ainvelos.com

Spoken by someone who clearly doesn't list his collection by original title...    As we've seen so many times, the rules indeed offer plenty of possibilities, on numerous different subjects, to mess up just about every piece of data beyond any use. Luckily most users have a little bit of common sense as well - and let me tell you: the minute you display your collection by original title, this little bit of common sense will jump right at you. But hey, I'll oblige: technically, you're absolutely right. Happy?

And rightly so, of course.

Suggestion for Ken: can we get a line addressing this little oversight into the "TV Series on DVD"-page of the rules?

Ah, but there is the rub.  For non-US releases of US TV series, the original title will be the title of the US release, not the title from the credits.  So if the US release had the season indicator on the cover, it can be entered into the OT field.

My post above only applies to the US release and, maybe, any other english release.  It does not apply to, as an example, the German version of this release.

I know I am right, I don't need you to confirm it.  I am, however, at a loss.  You claim that you ALWAYS follow the rules...so why are you giving me such attitude when I point out, and you freely admit, that what you are doing is against the rules?

But... I don't see asterisks, I see stars.  An asterisk is a 6-pointed mark that is often called a star, but it is not the 5-pointed star that appears in the JAG title.

It is the closest character available to us to represent what is on the cover.

Leaving them out all together does not make sense to me.

What would you suggest as an alternative?

In this case, an asterisk could be considered a 'reasonable' option by many people.  But since it isn't exactly what we see on the cover or screen, some may not find it to be accurate and lead to changes or debates like we are having right now.  So, until we have a corresponding rule to give us guidance, these issues will continue to crop up and any alternative that is suggested is nothing more than an opinion.

What if the separator were something that wasn't easily replaced by an asterisk?  Which character on the keyboard most closely represents a flower?  A bug?  A face?  It's a slippery slope to go down.

The real question to ask here is: What is the purpose of the title field?  If it is purely for display, then trying to make it look most like the displayed title on the cover or screen is great.  But, if there are additional uses, such as searching, adding in these additional characters can cause additional problems.  Based on the answer to this question, appropriate rules need to be drafted so this can be handled properly.

P.S. Interesting fact:  The asterisk that is printed on they key on my keyboard is a 5-pointed asterisk.  But both the Arial and Tahoma fonts display it as a 6-pointed asterisk.

I don't see anything in the rules for titles that tells us how to handle special characters that are not part of the normal keyboard.  Has this been clarified somewhere else on this forum?

Clarified is such an ugly word. I will only say "Batman", "X-Men 3" and "Taxi 4".

I guess, it depends on the reason you contribute for. If you want to share your work with others, "JAG" or "JAG: Judge Advocate General" would be the title of choice. If you want to make sure nobody finds these profiles when using the Add DVD by Title dialog, insert the asterisks.
