I like both suggestions, especially the "forced" one, because this is really annoying and a reason to avoid the disc...

I've been seeing more of these and less of close captioning in recent DVDs.  Perhaps this could be done with a simple tic box for SDH subtitles.

Close Captioning and subtitles are two completely different things, but yes, it would be nice to collect SDH data too. Tic box wouldn't work though 'cause if we has this option implemented, we need to be able to separate if disc has both. For example we can have English, English (commentary) and English (SDH) on the same disc.

I don't agree that the tic box wouldn't work.  We'd just have to have a separate tic box for all types of subtitle (regular, commentary, SDH).  We could potentially end up with 3 times as many possibilities as we have now, but there's no reason we couldn't still use the tic box concept.

Now that I think about it again, you're right. That would be in edit screen, but what about in view screen? Listed three times or some indicators that would tell us if it is regular, commentary, SDH or any combination of them?

Probably listed three times if all three are present.  The simple way would to treat each as a separate subtitle and the system wouldn't have to know that English, English Commentary, and English SDL are all actually the same language.

Good idea, but subtitles must be more improved.

- We need know if there are two subs for one lenguaje, if one is for earing people. (VERY IMPORTANT). Must be a search option relationed.
- We need know if comentaries has or not has a subtitles and in wich languaje or languajes. Europeans editions, can have 5 subtitles for comentarys, easyly... if there are not Warner desastres.
- We need know in musicals if there are sing subtitles and for dubbed version if the subtitles are forced for sings.

This is a problem that concerns several fields in DVD Profiler.

A golden rule when dealing with database data is "Null is not zero". What this means is that if the field is not mandatory, there should always be a way to differentiate between "no data entered" and any possible valid data. Basically, all optional fields should default to "unknown" (or something similar). However, following this rule consistently would make the program quite unwieldy. Still...

Subtitles should default to "unknown".
Video format should not default to NTSC or PAL (but should probably be required)
"16 x 9 Enhanced" should default to "unknown"
Dual Layered should default to "unknown" rather than SL
In fact, wherever there is a checkbox one should consider if there should be a third option, "unknown".

There are other fields that are not self evident
Rating details, for example. It defaults to blank, meaning there are none. Technically it ought to default to "unknown", but I'm not sure that it would be all that helpful.

Same thing with Original Title. Leaving it blank infers that the DVD title is the original title. Again, I'm not sure that changing this would be terribly helpful.

Good point in general. A few remarks though.

  • NTSC vs PAL as such does not apply to Blu-Ray and HD DVD, even though the frame rate can still be different in NTSC vs. PAL regions.

  • Double vs. single layer: as far as I'm aware, DVDP will nowadays check this automatically if you insert the disc into your drive.

  • Original Title: IMHO it might be helpful to know it has not been verified yet.

  • Another problematic field is CoO: in the present situation, leaving the field blank does not distinguish between unknown, multinational co-productions or a CoO that's not yet in the list.

True, but until Profiler has done that, it shouldn't default to SL.

I came to the same idea just yesterday, so +1 from me

I would love to push that idea, especially in case of the "forced" Subs.

For me sometimes it is horrible: Watching an US-Movie with german sound. But sometimes in the original version they were speaking in foreign languages (like in "French Connection"), but all was synchronized for german audio.

But as they had to make the original foreign parts "understandable", there is german audio with english subtitles. They are not even "forced", they are burnt into the movie. And sometimes this totally sucks!

I remember buying two DVDs a couple of years ago, both with automatic subtitles (nobody knows why!). And I couldn't find any way to switch them off! As usually you can't give back an allready opened DVD, I was lucky that the shop had exactly the same player I had and the seller also wasn't able to get the subs off. So at least I got my money back for those horrible releases!

A long time ago I created a mock-up what a newer Audio & Subtitles section could look like and extend the current one.

Unfortunately Ken never picked up on it and by now it doesn't seem likely that we'll ever get another feature update.
