If I remember my history correctly, 39 episodes was considered standard back in the 50s. Prospective shows were given a 13 episode trial period (1/3 of a normal season). That part, at least, has continued through today. As production costs (including performers' salaries) increased, networks started trimming the number of episodes down -- settling on 26 for a season (2x13) for a few years, but even that has fallen by the wayside -- so that now 22 episodes often makes up a "full" season on broadcast television in the US. Cable programming is different, and a "season" on cable is frequently 10-16 episodes. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges. We don't need no badges. Skip Simple timeline: SEASON (SERIES in the UK) ONE of DOCTOR WHO: - Captain Jack Harkness, is a time-traveling con man that the Doctor and his companion, Rose, meets during WWII. Due to his last minute heroics, the Doctor takes him on as another companion for the rest of the season. - In the finale, Jack is killed by the Daleks. Rose, in order to save the Doctor, absorbs the power of his vessel (the TARDIS) and defeats the Daleks. She also resurrects Jack in the process. But the power is so great that it is destroying her from within. The Doctor sacrifices himself by absorbing the power from her and regenerates into the Tenth (and current) Doctor. Jack ends up stranded in the future. SEASON TWO of DOCTOR WHO: - Torchwood is mentioned and hinted at throughout the season, finally being revealed in the final 2 episodes. SEASON ONE of TORCHWOOD: - Jack is back as the head of the Cardiff branch of Torchwood. He managed to travel back into the past, but ended up stuck there. He reveals that as a result of his resurrection, he is now immortal. He ended up joining Torchwood, partly to use its resources to locate the Doctor and find out why he is indestructable. - In the finale, Jack receives a signal that shows the Doctor has returned. He races off to find him. SEASON THREE of DOCTOR WHO: - This leads into the final three episodes of the season. Jack finds the Doctor and his new companion, Martha Jones, and gets into a new adventure with them. - After the adventure is over, Jack returns to Torchwood. SEASON TWO of TORCHWOOD: - Jack rejoins his team. He is joined in the middle of the season for a few episodes by Martha Jones, who also left the Doctor (she was being setup as a permanent member of the show, but the actress ended up signing onto "Law & Order: London" instead). SEASON FOUR of DOCTOR WHO: - Jack, Ianto and Gwen join the Doctor in the final 2 episodes (along with some of his other former companions, including from another spinoff, THE SARAH JANE ADVENTURES). SEASON THREE of TORCHWOOD (aka "Children of Earth"): - This is season (series) three. Rather than a 13-episode series, it was done as a 5-episode miniseries special event. There has been no decision made on the fourth series (though there most definitely will be one). The current showrunner has suggested it could be a full 13-episode season or another miniseries. |

| Posted: | | | | This gets quite interesting after day 4. I like it. Although I am left with the impression as many different ways as Harkness has been killed in just this mini-series, it seems likely that he has an Achille's heel somewhere yet to be discovered, or maybe he will change bodies ala the good Doctor.

| Posted: | | | | There was an episode of Doctor Who that had him dieing. Forget which season tho. Atleast it was hinted that it was him as they never came right out and said so. | | | Sometimes you are the bowling ball, sometimes you are the pins. |

Skip At the end of the first season of the new Doctor Who series the Doctor and Jack were trapped in the future fighting an anwinable battle against the Daleks. The Doctor had sent Rose back in time to save her. But she came back and tried to save the Doctor. She brings Jack back to life but the Doctor has to re-incarnate from the ninth into the tenth Doctor to save them. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

Skip Rose, with the power of the TARDIS, raised Jack from the dead and made him a "fixed point in time" according to The Doctor. He won't age or die. However, the third season of Doctor Who hinted that he may die one day. There was a recurring character known as the Face of Boe, the oldest living being in the universe. It is essentially a gigantic head in a vat of smoke. He revealed his last words to The Doctor ("You Are Not Alone") per a prophecy and died. At the end of the season, Jack talks about his past as a time-traveling agent on the Boe colony and who he became their poster boy -- "The Face of Boe." The creator said the comment was designed to be ambiguous -- he could be joking or that will be his destiny. |

Although it hasn't been officially stated, it has been hinted that Jack will be around for a VERY, VERY long time and will actually be another very old character who has appeared a few times over the course of the new series. Edit: Missed Synner's post saying the same thing in more detail! | | | Last edited: by Ardos |

| Posted: | | | | Oy, now what. I agree with Mr. Davies he created a great finale...but. It seems a shame to end it, looks like it has tremendous potential. I don't think the well is dry.
