After all, Deutchland is easier than Deutschland. Would you like that ? Would you be happy to see people asking to add a spelling mistake to your own name ????

I'm not sure if this is the right place to discuss this matter but I'm on your side. I simply don't get the point of this rule that makes us spell names wrong.

My suggested solution for this problem would be that a single credit with accents beats ALL credits without accents that are written in all capital letters:

AVELLÁN or Avellán would always "beat" AVELLAN, no matter how often she is spelled AVELLAN
AVELLÁN or Avellán vs. Avellan would be counted 1-1

I think it makes sense, because there is no reason for the guy that types the credits for a movie to randomly put accents on a letter. But we know that there are good reasons, at least in France, to remove them if the credits are written in capital letters. So why do we approach the whole subject like the accents are randomly put on a name ? Maybe this causes some new problems but they hardly can be worse than what's going on now:

1: The current rule doesn't help with crosslinks at all and I think that was it's purpose in the first place

2: It doesn't help finding a common name. If we have to seriously discuss if one twins "common" name is spelled different that the other ones, something is wrong with the rule, not with the name of the twins.

3: The rule keeps being ignored. I guess it's hard to force anybody to spell a name wrong against better knowledge. Or maybe many people simply don't know the rule (like me till last weekend) and I can tell you, I felt better back then

4: The rule wouldn't really be that important if all capital lettered credits would be rare, but they are common. So it adds countless wrong spelled names to the CLT and it's hard to make that up by finding correct spelled credits. I have no idea how many but I guess there quite a few people with a "wrong" common name only for this rule.

5: Errors happen all the time, with the rule or without it. In case of my Elizabeth Avellan DVDs she should be credited Avellan in the Spy Kids 3-D profile. Guess what - she is spelled Avellán. In the Sin City profile she should be spelled Avellán. Guess again - she is spelled Avellan, first name spelled Elizabth (missing e). Like I said, errors happen all the time and this rules doesn't help to make them less, I'd say the opposite is true:

Let's say somebody would want to correct the obvious spelling error in the Sin City profile without further knowledge. He would upload Elizabeth Avellan, and that could be refused for good reason because she is written Avellán in that movies credits. He has to be well informed to correct that simple typing error.

But after he went trough that learning process and now knows that the lady is spelled Avellán, he can wipe his á.. with that wisdom, because it's not allowed to edit her Avellan spelled entries. Not because she was ever spelled Avellan in any of these movies, it's because the spelling was AVELLAN  + this special rule

I made some statistics on the ~1300 names with accent of my collection (I count ç as accent since it is the same problem).
Quite each of those names are at least twice in CLT results (sometimes four times when two accents, as François Berléand). At present time, correctly spelled names win quite always in CLT results, since the new rule is rather recent, and from 2000 to 2008 correctly accented names were allowed.

Most of common names threads on accented names made the CLT results change, just because capitalized credits are more common than mixed case credits. So André Maranne was changed to Andre Maranne after a long work of many users to prove that the spelling mistake should be added. If we made the same on Gérard Depardieu, Mélanie Laurent and hundreds of top actors, we would get the same sad result. I have personnally begun a check on 200 of them, that should, per the rules, all change. I stopped that work, but guess the result should be the same for most of the 1100 others. What save us is the fact that some users that contributed more than 30000 times, and use this rule only to increase their contribution number, have not so many non-english movies in their collection, and have not really seen all the problem (they only know the cases where non-english actors play in English language movies).

...there it should be possible to get a correct linking in an easier way than with "correct" names.

Easier way is not a good reason. After all, Deutchland is easier than Deutschland. Would you like that ? Would you be happy to see people asking to add a spelling mistake to your own name ????

That's why I suggested the possibility of a local shown name you can assign to an actor. But should we really discuss this all again? We know this doesn't change anything.

And please, when we see the number of common names threads, with many that have not yet allowed to get the result, do not speak of easier way...

These are needed because of the made mistakes. (mostly imdb-clones, but also other problems)
The current system can just work if all would do it completely correct. Your System would also just work if everybody is doing correct. But the current could be done correct much easier.

And as always you just look to the single problem of the current linking system and not to all the other problems with different name variants, which still would remain, even with a different way for accented names.

This makes me always laugh.    Do you really think this is the motivation to contribute?

Yes, when a user makes a tiny change on a profile, then one month later another tiny change on the same profile, then one month later, a third tiny change on the same profile. Though  30000+ users hide carefully their collection, even if we suppose they contributed 6000 titles, that makes 5 contribution changes per profile.

What makes me laugh is your certainties about who are the good and bad guys, deciding which opinions are "laughable" or not.

Thanks Kluge. Own the movie also, but it seems I wasn't very interested in the credits at watching.

Sounds like a silly new title to the extended version, which is cut into 4 seperate stories.
Makes sense.

Let me start with the first, where you could confirm all credits:

Electra Avellán (2 confirmed credit)
Death Proof
Planer Terror

Electra Avellan (1 confirmed)
Life Blood aka Murder World aka Sunset Vampires

As this are all movies with her in database, the current common name is Electra Avellán.

So this is correct:
Quote:
... I would like to change her entry to Electra Avallán credited as Electra Avellan.

The Black Waters of Echo's Pond --> Electra Avellan as Rene

Quoting VirusPil:
Quote:
Elise Avellán (2 confirmed)
Death Proof
Planet Terror

Elise Avellan (0 confirmed)

No other movies with her in database, so Elise Avellán is the current common name.

Let me add: sometimes it happens, tha same movie has different credits in a different release. (Don't know an example, but theoretically it can happen) If this would be the numbers can change.

But in this case it looks as a imdb cloning problem.

The Black Waters of Echo's Pond --> Elise Avellan as Elise
