Quote: Voting here took me less than two minutes from car door out to car door in.
Took me about 10 minutes...but we had quite a few issues to vote on...and I parked about 5 minutes away. My precinct saw unusually heavy traffic this time. I showed up ten minutes after the poll opened, and by the time I put my ballot through the machine half an hour later, I was number 72. That's three times the usual number by the end of the first hour. | | | John

At least now the commercials and phone calls will stop. It will be nice to get back to normal again. The phone has been quite silent today, thank goodness. For the last 2 weeks or so, we got at least 6 calls a day (somedays more), I think. I was getting quite sick of it. At least none on my cell phone. | | | Invelos Software, Inc. Representative |

| Posted: | | | | The difference in the UK is that as soon as voting is started all reporting must stop. No canvasing. etc.
Nobody can discuss the voting / exit polls etc until after the last person has voted at 10pm - and then the votes are all counted (manually).
We have postal votes which can be sent in, in advance, but these are not counted until after 10pm with all the other votes. | | | Paul |

The best we've gotten here in the US is a national " Do Not Call" registry where we can list our telephone number to tell potential telephone solicitors we do not want to receive calls. They're supposed to honor this listing and are subject to some strict fines if they are caught violating the list. Unfortunately there are a couple of exceptions: Callls from Political candidates or organizationsCalls from CharitiesCalls from anyone you've done business in the pastAs a result of this "Do Not Call" registry, unwanted phone calls have gone down, but the "telephone spammers" are finding insidious ways around it. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? | Posted: | | | | There's an easy way around it, it's called "No entry in the telephone registers" (works fine at least in Germany). Phone solicitation at my private phones is nearly 0. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Quoting pauls42: Quote: The difference in the UK is that as soon as voting is started all reporting must stop. No canvasing. etc. It's similar in Germany. On election day (which is always a sunday) all campaigning is forbidden. But the research agencies like Forsa, Allensbach and others may ask voters after they have voted. Then at 6.p.m when the voting offices have closed, these agencies publish the first projections. They are usually close to the final result. Then the vote offices (which count mostly manually [although we have some regions that use Diebolt voting machines -> I hate these things]) start to report their results and by 10p.m. the projections aren't more than 0.1% off anymore. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

The only thing we can't do in the US even on election day is politic (campaign) within X feet of the polling place (where X may vary from jurisdiction to another). All that means is that you have a distance of X feet directly in front of the door to the polling place where no one is going to hassle (er, discuss things) with you or hand out campaign literature. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges?
