Asterisks it is then.

If you want to ignore that, be my guest but don't try and make me out to be the bad guy for pointing it out.

Let's make a deal: I'll no longer try to make you out the bad guy for pointing things like this out, and you don't single me out as the bad guy for applying the exact same little bits of common sense that are consistently used by the vast majority of the community. Because that's equally unfair. Such a compromise will save us all a lot of unnecessary bickering - how's that?

I went back an reread my post.  I can see how my saying, "at least it can't if you are following the rules," might have come across as a dig at you.  That really wasn't my intent.  I have had enough posts deleted in the last few days that I really am trying to keep my posts civil.  So I apologize if you felt I was pointing a finger at you, because I really wasn't.  You just happened to be the one who made the suggestion that, in my opinion, was against the rules.

As for the 'common sense' aspect.  As long as users don't pretend that it is what the rules require, I won't call them on it.  I may, and probably will, point out that it is against the rules.  If I disagree with it on a personal level, I will point that out as well, but I won't try to make them out to be the bad guy...as long as they don't try to make me out to be the bad guy for pointing out the rule violation.

I am trying to turn over a new leaf and be the alien with a little less of an attitude.

For non-US releases of US TV series, the original title will be the title of the US release, not the title from the credits.

Where does it say that? There may not even be a US release!

We are discussing the US release of JAG so my comment was specific to this issue and this issue only.  If it were the German version, the 'Foreign Films' rule for titles would apply...at least that is how I am reading it.  Sorry for any confusion.

I guess, it depends on the reason you contribute for. If you want to share your work with others, "JAG" or "JAG: Judge Advocate General" would be the title of choice. If you want to make sure nobody finds these profiles when using the Add DVD by Title dialog, insert the asterisks.

I guess I give the user community a little more credit for intelligence than you do.

I'd bet most of them would find it with very little trouble.

I think it has nothing to do with intelligence per se. We have to take a look at the circumstances under one does use the "Add by Title" feature.

My guess would be for adding to the wishlist or to the ordered list (where one doesn't know the UPC yet) or where one wants to compare several versions of the same title.

In many of these cases I simply don't know the cover. But I know that the show is called "JAG" because it says so on the screen (and IMDb agrees ).

If I were to enter "JAG" I wouldn't find it. If I enter just "J" with a filter on the US it comes down to 2,189 titles! Luckily for him, the "*" is sorted before any alphabet character but imagine it wouldn't be the star but a character that is sorted after "z"?

That is because the title of the series, as the screen cap that Karsten supplied shows, is 'JAG'.  Unfortunately...or fortunately, depending on your point of view...our rules ask for the title as it is on the cover, not the actual title.

In the case of M*A*S*H, there's ample evidence that the title includes the asterisk. And for M*A*S*H, those are actual asterisks in the title -- not stars.

I think we need to refrain from converting graphics to text as much as possible so that we maintain a decent ability to Add by Title. It's a text field after all. Recently, Ken filtered all Wall•E titles to Wall-E since the special character wouldn't show up properly in all parts of the system (or something like that). There's lots of weird graphic stuff in titles on front covers. I think we need to be cautious.

A few more:

It's still a "graphic" representation of 'M.A.S.H.' (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), which was the title of the book.

Where the "stars" surround a word or words in the title, they are not part of the title.  When they appear in between individual letters of a word of the title, they are, IMHO.

We did use claws to represent the 3 in "X-Men 3" and now you want to distinguish between star and asterisk?
