Oh joy. No internet setup required. It had already gotten an address using DHCP, assigned a default port for IP control and had catalouged all the media on my servers that I previously set up: all my CDs ripped to lossless WMA, all the mp3's of old cassettes, mp3 encodes of some old vinyl and 1/4" tapes - everything. And it all sounds like polished silver ... no matter how dull it was in the beginning - there is a new luster.

Ok, on to automation. I have to add the remote IR codes for the Onkyo RC-771M to a/v Dashboard. Then I have to get the spec for the receiver IP control, and I will build that one in as well. In anticipation of getting a Sony, I already have the Sony IP control spec - but alas it was not be. Onkyo is my new audio mistress - and she is hot!!!!

Oh well, back to the haunting sounds of Portishead - "Numb" one of my all time old favorites. Then maybe I'll do some Zeppelin, then maybe on to a little vintage Dr. Dre, then ...

By the way, thanks "dj".

Hey man, I've been so selfishly involved in my own deal, I forgot to send some props and good wishes your way. We all know that when you get to this level if capability, you almost can't go wrong. I'm sure you are enjoying your choice  as much as I am mine ... take care ...

Edit: oh I see I did already, so it's all good. Twice is even better.

Drat, I did the firmware upgrade and now HDMI handshaking doesn't allow simultaneous ouput anymore. Somehow I don't think it was a mistake ...

Perhaps you can return to the old firmware? Is there something in the release notes of the new firmware about this?

You will not believe this. I am auditioing the TX-NR3008. It has more inputs, and a better video circuit (as pointed out to me previously in this thread.) By the way, that handshaking problem was a problem with my FIOS box, and had nothing to do with the receiver.

Why am I considering the upgrade?

- The TX-NR1008 price has gone up since I bought mine (on Amazon)
- The TX-NR3008 price has gone down (on Amazon)

So, the price difference has reduced to the point where I feel it is worth it for the extra features, and I am hoping / assuming that the resale value of the TX-NR1008 is good.

I put my virtually new unit on Amazon as a "like-new" item. I would let it go for even a tad less to a member of this Forum.

Man I looked at the 3311 and I think I am in love, too bad it is way out of my current budget.

I am still looking at a receiver setup maybe a all in one package, I look forward to how this works out for you.

...

Ok, just over 1 year later and disaster. Turns out that a whole bunch of Onkyo receivers of this vintage have suffered, a now well-known, manufacturing flaw that involves bad capacitors on the video board. I'm still under warranty, but I have read that it can take up to 6 weeks to get a quality repair.

So now, I am pondering my game plan. Up til just a week or so ago, I have been enjoying stupendous performance and functionality. But not for this issue, I would have rated the unit 4.5 / 5 stars.

Now, I have also read that the xxx9 series uses a different vendor for the video board (no longer Toshiba), and it seems the problem has been solved. Furthermore, the new video circuitry is now the same as in the bigger 3009.

So, here are my curremt plans:

(1) Buy a new TX-NR1009, which is now at about 1/2 price of the TX-300x and it actually has everything I need. It has far better video specs than the 1008, which was the original reason that I went from the 1008 to the 3008. I really didn't need the extra power or inputs of the 3000 series.

(2) Repair the TX-NR3008 under warranty. Also buy a 2-year extended warranty ($85), and offer the factory reburbished unit with the extended warranty for sale, with full disclosure. I should be able to recoup at least the purchase price of the replacement 1009. I will also buy an extended warranty for that new unit.

Anybody wanna share thoughts on my approach?

O dear, that is really bad luck.

I would have reservations about buying the 2-year extended warranty on the old 3008, since I doubt whether you will be able to recuperate that money when you're selling it. Other than that, I can't see anything wrong with your plan.

I've looked up the German test of the 1009. They again class the 1009 as Reference, and they confirm that the video processing is very good. Their only minus point is that it only streams audio data, not video.

Comparing it to the 1008, they say the old model's video section is clearly inferior. Other advantages of the 1009:
  • Tone stability is even better.

  • It has the excellent DTS Neo:X.

  • Audyssey MultEQ has been improved as well, and now intervenes in a more subtle way.

  • The 1009 looks better.

Thanks. The extended warranty is only $85, and I figured it would allow me to ask a higher price for the repaired unit. I can't sell the item without full disclosure of the problem and that fact that it was repaired. So, the extended warranty might be an additional calming factor to a potential buyer. Maybe I'm being naive on that.

    I understand that.
Question is whether it will bring you $85 more in revenues...

Yeah, good point. Actually the issue may be moot if the warranty is not transferrable.

Hadn't even thought about that one. Of course you're quite right and you'd better check.

I wouldn't worry about "disclosure of the problem" so much, to be honest. If this is a well-known problem with this model, it might actually be an advantage to be able to sell it with that problem fixed - a bonus rather than something diminishing its value. You could advertise it as a receiver which has had the well-known issue such-and-so fixed, so no worries about that issue for any potential buyer.
