Now that stars = asterisks, I guess we have some work to do:

Or we can undo all of the MASH entries.

In the case of M*A*S*H, there's ample evidence that the title includes the asterisk. And for M*A*S*H, those are actual asterisks in the title -- not stars.

It's still a "graphic" representation of 'M.A.S.H.' (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital), which was the title of the book.

Where the "stars" surround a word or words in the title, they are not part of the title.  When they appear in between individual letters of a word of the title, they are, IMHO.

But what about other images that appear between letters or words in a title?

We are trying to convert an artists rendering into text.  This is where the problem is.  Since we are not allowed to use common sense or logic to determine the 'right' answer, we need rules that clearly state how to handle this.  I think it's all well and good that we are discussing this here, but unless it leads to new rules on how to determine the title from what is displayed on the cover, we're just wasting our time.

A different, but somewhat related issue:  Take a look at the cover of A.I.: Artificial Intelligence.  This uses a graphic image of what appears to be a boy standing to take the place of the I.  I think this was handled correctly in the profile, but in review, it could be violating the rules.  The title is not entered exactly as seen, because I do not see the letter I there.  I do see something there that could be interpreted as the letter I, but that interpretation requires me to apply logic and something other than direct transcription of what I see.

The title and credit block use asterisks. Asterisks are part of the standard character set on a keyboard and work just fine in the program. Stars are extended ascii characters and thus we either have to not use them or substitute another character for the star.

I understand the logic, but if we can convert stars to asterisks, we can convert all stars to asterisks unless there's a rule to clarify it.

What do we convert triangles to? I've seen those between words. Haven't seen them between letters yet...

Same situation with Elf. Wil Farrell is the "L".

Don't know if it's exactly the same but there was a similar discussion about this cover, the poll was overwhelmingly in favour of not including the line in the title

I just noticed that IMDb have changed 'Friends' to 'F·r·i·e·n·d·s'. Surely we're not going to have to do that as well, do we? Then again: what's the difference with this 'JAG' example?

They do, yes. But we don't. Is entering 'F·r·i·e·n·d·s' (or 'F·R·I·E·N·D·S' for that matter) really the way we want to go? Personally, I liked the overwhelming consensus against emulating these graphic elements in the old thread ninehours linked to.

+1

We really need to move away from duplicating graphical titles and use some common sense (Taxi 4 instead of T4xi, etc)...

Oh I forgot, you were supposed to check common sense and your brain at the door when entering these forums

I guess we disagree.  Use of 7 or 4 in those examples you gave are same graphical design license IMO.

The problem with this line of thinking is, what you believe to be 'common sense' may not be to someone else.  That is why we have rules...so that everyone is on the same page.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Perfect illustration of my point.

The stars are a graphic design element worked into the cover.

They should not be included in the title. J*A*G is not the title. The title is JAG.

If you wanted to correctly include graphic design elements into the title, it would be J?A?G.
Edit - Unicode characters display correctly when previewed, but change to question marks when actually posted. A forum bug.

Rules should be amended to state that title should come from the cover, but graphic design elements should not be included.
99.9% of all cat plans consist only of "Step 1."

<Sarcasm>Why not? It's quite obvious that the title, based on the cover, should be Quantum 0f S0lace 7 </Sarcasm>

No need for the sarcasm tag, this is the absolute truth.  If we aren't to use any common sense, the title would be exactly as you typed it.
