I don't see the point of starting these kind of threads. If you have a problem with a certain user, take it up with him/her, or contact Ken if you think the forum needs better moderation. Otherwise you're just throwing fuel at the fire.

I had that attitude back when I joined in 2000. I used to take a very active interest in how the software developed, I was even one of the quieter members who formed the committee and created the rule set. I miss being involved, but it's just not worth it.

I'd spend hours in debates, trying to make sure the program was a good balance between usability and accuracy. It just got so frustrating because there's a clique of members who will stonewall any and every discussion.

Skip, my friend, I don't deny you the right to defend yourself. But can't you remember the argument we had about Helena Bonham Carter? What a classic! You were typically stubborn and unrealistic. New users would have been terrified. Do you still insist that official printed multiple cross-referenced encyclopaedias aren't good enough for proof of a name? That's the sort of "guidance" I and others got sick of. You never back down, which is a character trait to be proud of really, but you're so aggressive with it. All block capitals and prevaricating.

Mithi quite rightly says stay out of the arguments. That's what I did. I only stick my neck out now when I see friends feeling like they have to retreat to be able to enjoy Profiler.

Very sad to see you go goodguy. You are indeed one of the good guys. You, along with all the time and effort you put into making tools for us to enjoy, will be sorely missed.

I hope you will reconsider and stick around, but in case you don't, I wish you the best.

Was just browsing through to see if anything new was up and noticed this trainwreck.  As a person who has decided "the hell with this", I just thought I'd make a couple of points...and then go away again.

Many of us who have left didn't do it because of a specific individual, but rather due to an unpleaseant general atmosphere, particularly in the contribution forum.  Blocking an individual is pointless and blocking all possible offenders would leave so little content as to not be worthwhile.  It's a fun hobby but not worth being abused over, especially considering the fact that we volunteer our time.

In my opinion, the site could be temporarily improved by flat out banning one or two individuals, however it wouldn't address the root issue.  The bottom line is that Invelos doesn't have a problem with the aggressive hostile posting that is regularly exhibited here.  They view it as free speech.  If this becomes an issue for you, then the only answer is to leave.  It really is that simple.

It's not a take my ball and go home little child's reaction, but rather the reasoned response of a rational adult who has concluded that they don't need to put up with this crap anymore.  Hang around long enough and you'll understand what I mean.  When you do, we'll gladly give you the ex-Profiler contributor's secret handshake.

As long as there are people in these forums who are convinced that their opinion is all that matters and the rest need to follow their lead and are strengthened by the fact that their posts are not being moderated or removed, nothing will ever change here. It will take a mentality change and from what i read in these forums, that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Instead of being a pleasant place to stay and talk about a program we all use and appreciate, these forums have turned into a gorilla breast drum showplace where that has become it's main goal.

I do not know why but some people here seem to consider these forums theirs and the moment you walk out of pace you'r in trouble. Your opinion doesn't matter and gets ridiculed the moment it differs or when theirs a hint of non agreement with the lead banana eater. Basically what happens in kindergarten and a process that normal adults grow out of. But as it seems some don't. It could also be a surrogate for achieving nothing in real life, all in all pathetic just the same.

These forums could or should be a place that motivates people to get involved but the way it is now, it only drives people away.

Sorry to see you go Goodguy...

This is easy to show me as the main cause of the poisonous atmosphere of those forums. I think it was also in Ken's mind when he decided to ban me temporarily. After that, I really wondered whether I was so negative, and I totally stopped posting during two monthes. Did things improved during that time ? Not at all. Bickerings between X and Y went on, X being always different, and Y always the same.

I've never read that anybody left because of me, but if Ken considers that banning me definitively will help, it's up to him to decide that. If I come here, it is to say what I think, and to help when I can. I simply also wished that things be more friendly, but I'm not the one who insults others, though I got myself a high dose of that kind of medicine.

Personally I feel a lot of the problems arise from the inability many users have to apologise for their actions.

In the past I know that I inadvertently upset one user. I apologised for my actions; because I knew my 'frustration' stemmed from a previous encounter with that user and not from the issue at hand.

Everyone, at some point, will offend someone else in these forums (intentionally or not). It doesn't take much effort to say sorry once the dust has settled.

The very fact that some people here have stated that (to paraphrase) 'in the past GoodGuy hasn't always been a good guy and some of his posts have been very nasty'; just goes to show that there is no forgive and forget and that every past grievance is remembered.

I too stay away from the poisonous atmosphere in these forums. I lurk. I listen. I post occasionally.
More importantly I continue to contribute and really that's all that matters.

We forum users are such a small percentage of Profiler users that I find it laughable now how important some people here seem to think they are.
We really are nothing in the scheme of things. Kind of like a boil on the backside of a giant....rather annoying and always there; but really not anything to worry about.

Some users obviously have a need to feel important here; which is why they bluster and bully. It's rather sad really when you think about it.

Personally, I love this program and I get enjoyment out of auditing my collection and submitting it for others to enjoy.

That's indeed something that's consistently forgotten. I've found time and time again that the forum's "consensus" (the rare occasions that one is actually reached at all, that is) on many of the issues discussed here is often the complete opposite of what's actually going on in the database on a day-to-day basis.

I bet contributions are a lot simpler if you never visit the forums. It's not as if earning stars and arrows (green, red or blue) is a goal in itself.

Make contributions for the betterment of the database, read the forums, but stay away from posting to the emotionally charged atmosphere which always drifts away from the original point after a couple of pages. Oops, I broke my own rule. Oh well, I  just won't respond to the flamers. As for goodguy, I'm sorry to see you go. Remember gang, Skip is well...Skip, and take it for what it's worth and not so personally...even though it is sometimes. Don't be drawn in. He makes me smile.

There you go again playing the martyr.  Where did I say you were "the main cause of the poisonous atmosphere of those forums"?  Show me?  I never said you were the main cause, only that you were ONE OF SEVERAL users who contribute to the poisonous atmosphere by taking every opportunity you can to attack Skip.

I don't have a problem with people disagreeing with Skip (or anyone else).  What I have a problem with is people using the very tactics they accuse Skip of using when attacking him.  So don't pretend you are merely an innocent victim in this manner.  You are no more innocent than Skip is.

While I understand you were unfairly treated in the past, that does not give you any right to be unsufferable here.  Get over yourself.

I say the same thing to anyone posting here.  If you don't want to receive "slings and arrows" -- don't throw any yourself.  You get what you give -- and that goes for Skip, Surfeur, Goodguy, T!m, and anyone else reading this.  I don't see many people with clean hands here.  The only difference I see is that Skip treats everybody about the same while the Anti-Skip faction reserves their vitriol and nasty behavior for Skip alone.

And another thing.  People:  Stop dredging up things that happened years ago to support your attacks on others.  I'm tired of reading that 2 years ago T!M did that or that back in the Intervocative days Skip did that, etc., etc. ad infinitum  It serves no useful purpose other than venting one's spleen to keep harping on what happened years ago.  Get over it.

I have not read, nor will I read, this entire thread.  I read as much as I could of the thread linked in the first post.

First I find the whole debate confusing and unsure why anyone would be so emotionally attached to an opinion of Kan vs "Kan" or whatever - on either side.

Second as a newer user I have found Skip to be friendly and helpful.

Third I hate too see anyone so knowledgeable about this product move on for such personal reasons.

Finally this is not the only forum I am involved with.  Every one seems to have the complete spectrum of people involved.  Some people just don't get along.  Hate to see such, to me anyways, trivial spats take on a life of their on like in this case.

Good luck too everyone involved

Thanks for saving me the effort in typing Ken.  Everything you said, in both posts, is true.  Skip is an easy target, because he is so vocal, but there is enough blame to go around.  As you said, there are very few people with clean hands...and please, don't be snide and make me post the proof.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.

We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Bye.

Fudge. This is a big loss for the DVD Profiler community. Your tools make all difference for the program. Glad I decided to purchase a license for Profile Comparison Plus, because your efforts need to be rewarded. I hope you find a way for future updates, beyond 3.6.

For the last months I occasionally visit the forum, only to find posts like Matthias'. Sad, really.

I agree! Very well written by Ken (another Ken  ) , and very neutral. Green one from me!

I agree ... as long as the snide remarks remain about 'just' DVD Profiler. But sometimes, remarks are being made that have nothing at all to do anymore with the question or topic and are just personal attacks. In those cases, I can understand a person gets fed up with it.
