Let me make sure there is no misunderstanding of what I am saying.

There are a lot of things that don't make any sense to me.  But that is an opinion based on my own standards.  Your standards may be different.

To say that someone else has no common sense, even if it is just about this one thing, is an insult.  Just because they don't agree with you doesn't mean they don't have common sense...it just means they don't agree.

Looks to me like there is a language problem that causes a misunderstanding here.

I believe that what Surfeur means is that someone who is copying spelling mistakes is not using his common sense (in that instance), not that he has no common sense. Big difference.

Gunnar:
A minor correction

"I believe that what Surfeur means is that someone who is copying spelling mistakes is not using HIS(surfeur's) common sense (in that instance), not that he has no common sense.

The reason I specified HIS, Gunnar, is that by my definiton of common sense we are dealing with data which is provided by the DVD Distributor and correcting a Distributor generated "typo" we are no longer dealing with the data, we are now interpreting the data, which is in essence a personal preference which belong only in one's local database, Why do i put typo in quotes, because sometimes typos may be intentional for reasons which may only be clear to the distributor or upon watching the film. Also correcting typos means by whose standards, isit color or colour, we all know those stupid yanks can't spell. Is it judgment or judgement. This also leads to other interpretations, grammatical errors, punctuation errors, maybe even disliking sentence structure. It is not unusual for me towonder just who the *&^% was that wrote this. And pretty soon we have an Overview that no longer looks anything at all like the back cover and the stage is set for ping-ponging over who created the best interpretation.

Surfeur:

France has Speed Limits just like they do in the US. I may disagree with a given speed limit, but if I ignore the Rules(Laws) their is a price. I suspect that if I attempted to use your kind of argument in front of judge after In received a ticket that I would be in big trouble. Whether you disagree is totally irrelevant, it changes nothing, the Rules will remain the Rules and that is simply the way it is.

Your simplistic answer, surfeur, shows either an unwillingness to understand the whys and wherefores or the inability. In either case in your mind YOUR common sense is the ONLY possible answer.

Saying that someone has no common sense when they correct a spelling error in an Overview is not a statement that they have no common sense in any area of life.

That is your opinion, and you are welcome to it, but that does not make it true.  I have been reading his posts for quite a while and I believe that is exactly what he is saying.  If you don't agree with him, you have no common sense.

...."when it comes to specific Rules of DVDP" is clearly the implication in all of his posts.  To suggest otherwise is disingenuous, IMHO.

Even if it had been an insult it was a remarkably trivial one.

And your point is what?  An insult is an insult.  surfeur51 has said that he isn't trying to be insulting and maybe, just maybe, it might be his bad english.  I am simply pointing out how, in my opinion, what he is saying is insulting.

When you question someone's common sense, you are questioning their judgment.  Where I come from, that is an insult.

Keep in mind, there is a difference between pointing out that something is insulting and being insulted by it.  I was not insulted by his post, but I am sure some people might be.  I made the mistake of letting him get to me a little while back, rest assured I will not be making that mistake again.

And does that mean you need to hunt them down and shoot them with a Martian missile?

There are things that matter - and things that don't.

One of my friends died a few years ago from MS. That is something to be upset about - but to be worried by what Surfeur said. No.

Perhaps we all need to remember what is actually important in our lives and not allow ourselves to get distracted by what is ultimately of little importance when there are so many other things that are.

I did not hunt it down.  This was a continuation of a previous discussion.

Again, I wasn't upset by it.  I was simply making an observation based on a previous exchange.  I think I am a fair minded person and I am not picking on Surfeur.  In this case I thought he was wrong and I said so.  In another thread, I felt he was being treated unfairly, and I said so.

This entire forum is, ultimately, of little importance.  To be sure, this entire hobby would fall into that catagory as well.  Are you suggesting that we should not allow ourselves to get distracted by it?

I am not trying to be argumentative...though I am sure I am coming off that way...so I apologize if I have offended.

I think we all get involved in these discussions and thats fine but we shouldn't personalise everything. It's actually unlikely that others mean to attack us personally.

Its more likely that they just think we have crazy ideas - which doesn't mean that they think we belong in the nut house.

On this we can agree.  I try not to take anything personally and do my best not to attack someone personally.  I will admit that I am not always successful on either count and, for that, I apologize.
