Rank IS part of a military member's name. At a private Squad party our Unit Commander showed up and I made the huge mistake of addressing him by his first name. Of course I was a little drunk at the time and it was a momentary lapse of judgement but the result was the same. NEVER DID THAT AGAIN .

Thank you.  Here I thought I was going crazy.  You NEVER address them without the rank unless given permission first.  It is always, as an example, "Hello Sergeant Jones" or "Nice to meet you Sergeant."  As in that example, you can drop the last name, and just use the rank, but you never drop the rank...unless he says something like, "Call me Joe."

Come to think of it, the military never uses a person's first name with their rank, so it would have to be Private//Sanders.

More often that not, you are referred to in the military by last name only if you are in the enlisted ranks, so maybe it should really be //Sanders!

Military protocol and assigning someone a name are two entirely different things!!!!

It is totally improper not to use a person's military rank when addressing them (especially non-coms and officers).  That does not make it part off their name!

So when you go to a bank and ask for a loan, the bank people will actually address you as "Chief Master Sergeant Smith" or will they simply say "Here's your loan, Mr. Smith"?

Outside of the military environment t is doubtful that ANYONE will call you by your new name!  How uninformed of them!

If you're in uniform, they might say, "Here's your loan, Sergeant Smith," without the "Chief Master" part.  If you're in mufti (civvies for those of you in Yorba Linda, to paraphrase Rush Limbaugh), they'd probably say, "Here's your loan, Mr. Smith (or John)"

It would depend on the situation.  If they were in a bank on base, and in uniform, it would probably be 'Seargeant Smith'.  If it were in a civilian bank, and the person was out of uniform, it would be 'Mr. Smith.'

It really comes down to knowledge, respect and courtesy.  If you didn't know the person was in the military, you would use a normal greeting.  Once you know, however, you include the rank as part of the name unless they request otherwise.

In film credits, which is what started this whole thread, we know how the person wants their name credited and that is how we should enter it.

I did not have the opportunity to retire do be injured in combat but for those that do retire, some of them like to be addressed by their rank. I had a neighbor when was growing up that wanted to be addressed as Lt. Col. Scott. He was retired from the Marines.

but rules is as credited. If the end credits has them credited with their military rank then we need to add it here.

I've never argued that we should not enter the rank in DVDP if it appears in the credits.

I take exception to the statement that someone's military rank is actually part of their name.

It's not, any more than "Mr." is part of anyone's name!

Exception noted, but I know a lot of people who believe it is...all of them career military.  With all due respect, I will defer to their opinion as I believe they have earned that right.
