This is a pure fantasm from you. I never wrote anything that may let think that.

Nonsense. You want to correct typos that might appear in Overview, you wanted to use François, despite the Credits saying Francois due to your cultural requirements,. Fortunately now i5th the alias system that can be dealt with once we sort out a standard. But I remember that well. You have a strange view of databases and their functioning, it has to function as YOU want.

This has nothing to do with anyone's personal preference or opinion. If the contributor submits a name then the voters will decide whether it's appropriate based on the documentation provided. Once again...very simple my friend.

The biggest flaw I see, in not having a standard, is this...

Say I audit a profile and decide that the common name for J. P. Sanderson is John Paul Sanderson.  I find documentation to justify my decision and submit the change.  The voters agree with my change and vote 'yes', Gerri agrees with the change and it gets accepted.

Two weeks later, someone else audits a different title and decides the common name should be John P. Sanderson.  He finds documentation to justify that decision and submits the change.  People have forgotten my submission and vote 'yes' on this one, Gerri agrees and it gets accepted.

We now have two common names, for the same person, and have gained nothing.  They can't be linked, so what was the point?

That being said, it is not my db and I will live by Ken's decision on this matter.

I would think that people who have both films would obviously notice that and vote accordingly. Besides once accepted things can be corrected. They are not written in stone.

Actually, the biggest flaw I see is that it causes endless amounts of bickering.

I don't know why you would think that.  From what I have seen, there are people that will vote 'yes' on just about anything.  And what happens if people don't own both titles?  Or, as I said, people simply forget that they already picked a common name for this person?

I have a fairly decent memory, but I will admit that it is not perfect.  I can't tell you which titles I voted on two days ago much less two weeks ago.  But that's just me I guess.

it all revolves around YOUR desire to manipulate the database to your personal preferences

Why is it that you have to accuse everyone who has a different opinion from yours of wanting to manipulate the database? Can't you just discuss the issues without throwing around these insulting accusations?

There will always be somebody who remembers. Your saying nobody remembers and everyone misses the change...it's possible I guess but unlikely.

To avoid different common names I'd have to say the simplest idea has been suggested before. A sticky thread with common names added would help the regulars who read the forums. I'm with everyone who hasn't got a problem with personal preference since the common name is just a method for linking not a definitive statement for who the common name should be for any particular reason. The submitter just needs IMO to show they are the same person and haven't already been linked. Call them whatever to link them. Once it's done and accepted anyone could post details on the sticky thread. If a kind soul made the first post then they could edit that post periodically so they are all easy to find.

Don't forget not only submitters could check there but also voters so most times one of the voters should spot it. A link should make life easy for the screeners.

I tried that Graveworm and got blasted left right and centre, people claiming it would be a waste of time and effort as everybody knows what the "common name" "real name" and "credited as" is already.

But I'll go along with it...a simple sticked for actors whereby Fred Smith can be associated with IF proven Freddy Smith, Frederick Smith etc.
