| Posted: | | | | Sony and Toshiba, in a joint press release this morning anounced their immediate intention to set asside all differences and join forces to roll out all future releases on UMD. Manufacturing of DVDs, HD-DVDs, and BluRay discs halted today as plans to convert pressing plants to UMD production started implementation.
Sony's president Stan Glasgow, saying "we realized that sales of UMD had absolutely no way to go but up, so clearly that's a positive thing," announced that UMD would immediately replace all other media sales and manufacturing from Sony. "Besides," he added, "high definition is the future and we want to live in the here and now."
Microsoft's chairman Bill Gates announced in a hastily prepared release that Vista drivers for UMD are in the "late beta stages," apparently oblivious to the fact that UMD hardware for PCs does not exist.
Panasonic, Sharp, LG, and other high definition display manufacturers took a dive in off-market trading Sunday as industry analysts predicted a sharp decline in demand for HD TVs.
