| | Posted: | | | | Anyone know some general guidelines (or where to look this up) regarding screen sizes as they relate to viewing distance? I know "bigger is better" but I want to know if there's anything published on this. I'm only interested in LCD at the moment due to viewing angle and longevity. I'm looking at Sony KDL-46XBR4 46" LCD, but might get the 52". I have a hard time telling which size to get just based on viewing at Best Buy and the Sony Store.  My viewing distance is anywhere between 8 and 9 feet. I know most people will say the 46" is plenty for this distance. Thanks, | | | JAFO

| | Posted: | | | | this is the best explanation i've seen, specifically because it does not strictly use a math equation... it offers editorial. its a bit older, but it holds the test of time... according to them, the 46" on this may not look so great for analog signals, but if you have digital cable or sat, it will be fine... for viewing HD the 52" would be perfect.... so basically... if you plan on mostly watching hd content 52" would win out... but if you still watch a lot of regular tv and dvd the 46" is going to be more satisfying.... by the way... the model you are looking at is SPECTACULAR!!!! you may want to consider the slightly more expensive XBR5 version... i personally prefer it because of the piano black finish... sadly that is the only differance between the sets and most people can't justify the price differance. | | | | -JoN | | | | Last edited: by ruineddaydreams |

| | Posted: | | | | Thanks for the help. It sounds like the 46" is preferable if I'm going to mainly watch SD, otherwise the 52" would be better. I'm not going to drop $3500 on a TV and replace it in a few years... So I'm hoping I watch less and less SD content as the years go by. Both me and my wife were leaning toward 52", so this helps. Yeah I know they look good... I've seen the 46" and Sears, Best Buy, and the Sony Store... The 52" at Best Buy and Sony Store... Amazing. | | | JAFO

| | Posted: | | | | Along the bigger is better lines, I was deciding between a 50" and 56" this time last year. I went with the 56" and have never once regretted it. If anything I've sometimes thought that maybe I should have held out just a big longer for the 61".  Just keep in mind that it will most likely look a lot bigger at home (which is good  ). | | Posted: | | | | At 8 or 9 feet, 52 inch. Generally you're going to go for about half the distance (roughly) of the viewing area to screen. I believe the newest THX guidelines actually call for close to 75% of the distance on HD sets (.72 if I remember correctly). |
