In a discussion I had with another member concerning a Hammer Film Productions contribution we realized that the rules actually don't say anything about adding studios as credited. Despite that, there are tons of contribution notes giving "as credited" as a source.

So, some questions came up in my weird mind

1) Are we to prefer an on screen credit (possibly only a logo) or the official studio name at that time in case they differ?

2) Which on screen credit can be used, and with what priority? Logo? Copyright notice? Title screens? End Credits?

3) What if a production company isn't credited and it is verifiable who produced the movie? Should we add that company (as long as there's free studio slots)?

4) Should we replace a company credited under a pseudonym (I'll admit right away I don't know such a case) with it's correct name?

1. It depends. The rules are after "correct names" for studios, whatever they may be. A credit for "an AMBLIN production" would result in an "Amblin Entertainment" credit, so there you'd get it from the logo, not so much from the actual credit. It may be the other way around in other cases.

2. Again, it depends. The rules do specify the order of the studios: theatrical release studio first, then production company/companies, and then, if there's room left, the DVD distributor. That only leaves "priority" an issue if there's more than one production company involved - I tend to enter those in the order in which they appear on-screen.

3. Personally, if I'm absolutely sure a certain company was involved and there's have room for it, I might include it in my local database. Probably not a good idea for the online database, though.

4. I'd say: yes. Again, the rules are after "correct names" for studios. Anything that prevents us from having multiple entries for the same company seems welcome. But it's not really worth discussing without an actual example, though.

1) was mainly about whether the actual company name is to be preferred over the on screen credit or not so I don't quite get your answer :D but as Tim answered similarly I might just have worded it badly.

I was referring to movies where there are credits on more than one place which (>95% of the movies have at least a logo / title screen AND a copyright notice)

We use the on screen credit as long as it is the 'complete studio name'.  If it happens that it is only a logo, 'Touchstone Films' comes to mind, then I use that.  But in every case, I use the official studio name at the time the film was made.  The rules give us examples...'Universal Pictures' not just 'Universal'.

My order of priority is this:
  • Title screen

  • End credits

  • Logo

  • Copyright notice

  • The latter two are only used if the first two do not exist.

I don't think so.  There is no way to indicate an 'uncredited' production company.

Again, I don't think so.  We should use the name that is in the credits.
