I am having a discussion with some other users about the country of origin for "Rambo" ("Rambo IV" or "John Rambo" as the movie is named in other countries).

The credits state "Millenium Films presents a Nu Image Production for Equity Pictures Medienfonds GmbH & Co KG IV" and in the copyright section you can find the entry "EQUITY PICTURES MEDIENFONDS GmbH & Co. KG is the author and creator of this motion picture for purposes of copyright and other laws in all countries throughout the world".

According to the other users' opinions the country of origin should be "Germany" (because of Equity Pictures Medienfonds, a German company), while in my opinion the first listed production company "Nu Image Productions" makes "United States" the correct entry.

Unfortunately problems like this one are still not clarified in the rules. So what do you think ?

This tells me that Nu Image has produced the film.

The copyright situation is not relevant for the country of origin as it is used in profiler.

Do you have a source for that?

The company name EQUITY PICTURES MEDIENFONDS suggest the film was made with "stupid German money" (money from media fonds, like "LotR 2" or "We Were Soldiers"), so IMHO this would make the film a German/US co-production.
The question is how do we weigh the importance of the production companies to decide what CoO gets listed... and then: can we at all? In this case I don't think so since it is rather improbable that one of the producers shows up here and tells us how exactly the film was produced...
The solution would be to allow for more than one CoO but that's for Ken to decide...
Bye,
Elwood

Based on this credit I would say Nu Image are the company we're looking at, as they're the only ones who get a "production" credit. The fact that it says "for Equity Pictures" suggests that they actually paid for the film, but we don't follow the money for this credit.
Ideally yes, a German/US co-production may be more appropriate. But I wouldn't vote against a US CoO if someone really insisted on submitting one. I would however vote against a German CoO as the credit above strongly suggests they weren't the primary production company.

I would say it's a US production.

Here's an old web article from 2005: Nu Image/Millenium Films begins 'Rambo IV'

Quote:
US-based film production company Nu Image/ Millennium Films have acquired the film rights to the 'Rambo' film franchise from Miramax/ Dimension Films, with principal shooting for 'Rambo IV' to begin in Sofia, Bulgaria in January 2006, with filming locations in India and the USA.

"Rambo IV" begins preliminary shooting in Bulgaria in January 2006, as Nu Image/Millennium Films acquire film rights from Miramax/ Dimension Films.

Stallone is ready to shoot ''Rambo IV."

Quote:
Nu Image/Millennium Films, the production company that announced last week it would produce an Edgar Allan Poe biopic to be written and directed by Stallone, announced on Sunday that it had purchased the Rambo franchise rights from Miramax/Dimension Films and was planning a shoot on locations in Bulgaria, India, and the U.S. starting in January 2006, after Stallone shoots Poe this fall. In his own statement, Stallone said, ''I've signed the deal and I have the old headband, machine gun and bow and arrow ready to go. I am looking forward to showing movie fans the real action hero again.''

Nu Image Making Rambo IV in 2006!

Quote:
Nu Image/ Millennium Films had a co-production deal with Miramax/ Dimension Films, which had been in place till the Weinstein Brothers left both companies. Nu Image/ Millennium Films acquired the rights to the ‘Rambo’ film franchise, with their chairman, Lerner, stating that Stallone is "one of the smartest guys I know." Having persuaded Stallone to co-star with a younger actor in ‘Rambo IV’, Lerner is confident about the film’s future success. "It’s a franchise," he says. "If No. 4 works, then you have a No. 5."

Do you happen to know a country where the movie was named this? That was the original title here too, but for some bizarre reason it got changed to just Rambo, but I'm interested in getting some posters from a country where the original title was retained...

Goodguy already listed the countries. The reason it was called JR in Germany is, because the first part was already called "Rambo" here.

And as usual, IMDB has incorrect data. At least Finnish DVD and Blu-ray releases are Rambo, not John Rambo.
