Star Wars - What is the best way to name them?

How do I figure out what the consensus is?  The 3 most recent Star Wars are problematic.  I have UPC matches for all 3 of them, but they appear as :

Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones: Widescreen
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith: Widescreen

I can't stand the non-standard naming convention.  I would edit them all and resubmit, but was wondering what the consensus is before I do so.  The cover art for each isn't very helpful in making a decision either.  They all have a great big STAR WARS with the episode title underneath, with the whole overlaid with a great big I, or II, or III.  The original set are the same.  I don't care which format is selected, I just want them all to respect the same naming convention.

Name them whatever you want and then lock them.  I've lost count of the number of titles I've renamed because of my own sensibilities.  The online is never going to make complete sense.  If this idea bothers you, then it's time to start making use of local locks.  I'm not trying to sound harsh, but we all end up hitting a point where our personal taste diverges from the online.  Sounds like you're approaching that point.

Yeah, unfortunately the online database uses whatever's on the DVD cover and it seems they changed their minds between films as to how to write the title!
I'm with mdnitoil, just make it consistent in your own database and lock the title - I do this with a lot of my "series" DVDs.

Edit: Of course, if the title you have doesn't match the cover, then by all means edit the title and submit.

2 of those titles are not according to the contribution rules.

For the first to be correct, it should be -  Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace
For the third to be correct, it should be -  Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (widescreen should be moved to edition if it is listed on the cover.

I've never seen any Star Wars movie using non-roman numerals. So the "1" is most likely wrong.

I can't help but notice that this has something to do with the wide differences of opinion in some countries and the lack of coming to some sort of a consensus.

Same for me. There are many movie titles that can be put in different forms, specially for series (James Bond, Jason Bourne, Indiana Jones, Inspector Harry...). Each user has his own preferences, and dvdprofiler allows to do what you want in your local database.

Yes, is there any way we can fix that?  Even something as trivial as spacing around colons.  In Canada, there is no space before, but one after (as in "Episode I: The ...").  When I lived in France, the norm there was a space before and after as in "Episode I : The ...".  I realize this is trivial, but it affects the sort order and ends up requiring some custom sorting to fix.  Either way is fine with me, but how do we define a rule?

DD.

PS.  And yes, agree with DJ Doena, that was a typo on my part, apologies.  It is listed in DVDP with the Roman numeral, not the English numerals.

Great!  Thanks for that.  That is exactly what I wanted.  Can still get updated profiles if anyone finds mistakes, but can lock just the title.  Didn't realize it worked that way, thought it would lock the entire DVD (which is also an option).  Ok, I have "locked in" what is for me the correct way of listing them (which in case anyone is interested is "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith").

Till the day comes along when all 6 films are in One box set ( Bluray?) with all new art work for that one set the artcovers  will then reflect the proper look.
Right now the reason why 4 5 and 6 look the same is they all came out on the same day in sept 04 ,, Yet the other three came out each year after year .
In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Now the World is weird and People take Prozac to make it Normal.

Yeah, except I do have to say the covers are uniform.  Even the now-called Eps IV, V, and VI have the same cover design; a big STAR WARS with the Episode title underneath, and the whole overlaid by a big Roman Numeral.  There is definitely consistency in the actual DVD covers (at least the ones I have).  Also, the spines are all the same, which is great.  Big roman numeral at the bottom in the same place for all 6 films, THX, LucasFilms, STAR WARS, and the episode title all in the same spot.  The problem, is how they are titled in DVDP.  Since the DVD covers have no separators (no colon, no dash, etc.), people have made up what they thought was best, and not many people have the same idea.

Long live title locking!

The rules for where we get the title from changed about year or so ago. It's possible that some of your Star Wars profiles haven't been updated since then, which is why there is a mismatch.
If the title in the profile doesn't match the title on the cover and it's not a re-release cover, please feel free to change it and submit it.

:-).  That is the problem I am trying to get across (but apparently without much success).  Please have a look at the profile : UPC 024543023883 (phantom menace).  There are no colons or hyphens on the cover, but the words don't follow either in a way in which everyone will write them the same way.  The cover makes no mention of the word Episode, however the title when the movie is playing does.

You could interpret the cover any way you like :

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace

etc. etc. etc.

We can eliminate a lot of your comment right off the bat.

Star Wars I - The Phantom Menace
Star Wars Episode I - The Phantom Menace
The above do conform to profiler, we use the colon. You can do that locally if you wish but data in that form is not contributable and should not be accepted.

OK, according to the contribution rules we use a colon, and only a colon for subtitles. And as you say there is no word "Episode" on the front cover. So that means the title can only be written as:

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace

No other variation follows the rules for the online. So ideally the word "Episode" should be removed from the title and the change submitted to the online. Of course, if you like the word "Episode" in there, there's nothing wrong with keeping it for your local.

Bold by me...
check the rules page... it don't matter what is in the credits when you play the movie the title comes from the Front Cover Only per Rules for the online database.
