1)  DVDSpot had a validation in place such that when a user created a ticket for a DVD, it would generate a warning if anyone else was already working on one for that same UPC.  Is there anything like this in Profiler?  If not, while I realize that Profiler has a different flow, could something like this be developed?:

When someone tries to add a disc locally and the program fails to find a profile match in the database, it would return a message if there is a submission pending for that same disc.  It seems to me this would be especially useful for new releases/announcements where several users might be trying to add a disc concurrently.  (It would also be useful for freebie DVDs about famous architects and cities in western New York State. )

2)  Is there a way to access the notes provided to support inclusion of uncredited cast in a profile--preferably without having to download the profile?  Alternately, it would be useful to have a database or other repository for accepted uncredited cast along with the documentation provided for their inclusion.  If there were either of the above, a user entering or modifying another edition of that movie would be able to check the same sources himself, and use them to include and support including them in his own submission.  I think this would lessen two things: a great deal of duplication of effort in trying to find acceptable sources of information to justify the listing of uncredited cast; and users just submitting profiles omitting the uncredited cast to avoid the effort of chasing them all down.

A couple of things before I hit "Submit":

I am not shooting down Profiler.  I like Profiler.  Profiler is good.  And I know Profiler is not the Spot and never will be.

I am not lazy.  But I don't want to spend hours duplicating the research of others.  Duplication of effort is wasteful.  Some would add the uncredited cast, cite the sources verbatim and not check.  But since the reviewers have to check them anyway, wouldn't it save them effort, too, if they had already been checked for the previous submission(s)?

That said, I'd appreciate your thoughts on my suggestions.

1) Don't think something like that is necessary as new submissions are usually handled very fast. IF you want to make sure you're not doing something already done there is a way to check. Just create the profile with the correct UPC + locality and then check the notes for it (either by contributing it or I think there also is a link in the program to the notes, isn't there?)

Thanks for that.

I'll look for the link for the notes.  That would be very helpful.  (Would that be in the Online menu?)

As for "Uncredited Cast" you will only find uncredited cast listed in New profiles where the user has given a TimeStamp in his/her contribution notes as to when in the film (DVD) they appear.

Like my own submission for:- EAN: 5014437943033: Iron Man (UK)

Cast as Credited from end credits in credit order.
exception to cast
Samuel L. Jackson appears at time stamp 2:00:30 (short piece after all the credit have run)

Or if the profile is a INVELOS import (grandfathered) from the old IVS site, where we did not have to provide documentation for submissions, we just voted yes/no.

But since moving over to the new way whereby documentation HAS to be provided a lot of erroneous crap data has been kept out of the submission, (plus the paper trail) lets anybody see where the data has come from, which when considering the legal implications of datamining, helps keep the Invelos database as pure as the DVD credits.

As for know if a profile has been recently worked on, 9 times out of 10 by regularly keeping your profiles up to date, I do this by the "Refresh Updated Profiles" icon will force your local DVDP to check for new and fresh updates to all profiles, so if you then put say ".uga\e" into your drive today and the DVD was release say two days ago the chances are that somebody in your locality may well ahve already submitted the profile and it has been approved and released, DVDP will recognise this fact and tell you that there is an available profile for the DVD online "Would you like to download the update before proceeding".

Addicted and Hydrox appear to have answered as well.

And these timestamps are for reviewers to check the information on their own copies of the movie?  That makes sense.  Thanks.

Not only for reviewers, when your submitting addition to already accepted profiles other users who have the same DVD can then use the Timestamp to verify for themselves.

So if you have then exampled DVD R2 UK edition you could put that in your player / computer drive move to the timestamp stated have a look then vote 'Yes' that's so'n'so or vote 'No' looks nothing like who you say it is, which then also helps the screener/s to decide whether to accept or not.

But either way once it's accepted the evidence is there in the contribution notes for anybody to see, and if in say a couple of years time it's re-released in outer Mongolia and it's used to create a clone profile and that person uses the contribution notes for the original profile for verification he/she just have to refer to such in their notes - "Copied from EAN/UPC xyz" and if need be the screeners or over voters can refer to the same notes.

You might not be able to recognise some of the actors (due to make-up, special effects etc) but they maybe referred to in some of the extras that come on the DVD:- Actor 'X' did the scene 123 but preferred not to be credited in the end credits because:  type of thing, again if you can find the evidence use it, but I would not use anything I found on a Third Party DB as gospel, and be careful referring to say 2 or 3 websites that say he/she appears as they maybe getting their info from the same 1 source (a lot of websites get their info from IMDb).

Cable:

Keep in mind that your Contribution Notes become a part of the permanent record for any given title, they serve as sort of a bibliography for reference. So be thinking when you type your Notes what they will tell somebody six months or more from now.

That's worse than what people do with my real name.

I'm usually very careful with my words.  Thanks, Skip.

P.S. I tried scrambling your name, but only came up with an unpleasant epithet.

(And I don't use such words.)
