| Posted: | | | | Innocent question, but curious to know,.., When I opened up my profiler 3.5 build-1222, I got an announcement stating that there was a newer version (1228?).,, but was wondering and asking., I thought just opening up the program on my desktop, ,,, would that then 'talk' to the Invelos site and send the request back to me as stated?? I thought the program never upload, or be linked, until requested? In Other words, if you think about, Would Invelos know how many times a day you open the program only., isn't that a type of privacy issue.. Can Ken see how many Invelos programs are opened at any one time, ? regardless of any uploads or downloads.. ... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | I hadn't thought about this before but you're right. There isn't an option to disable auto version checking. |

I don't see where is the problem. Even If Ken could know each time I open dvdprofiler, I really don't care, as he has probably other things to do than spying thousands of users. | | | Images from movies |

| Posted: | | | | Only Invelos knows if this kind of information is recorded. It's possible that Ken can see a log of how many times the servers are accessed, it's probably even essential for a company to know that their bandwidth is sufficient. However in order for Ken to be able to link this with individuals he would also have to record the IP address used or have the program transmit your username without your knowledge. They are unlikely and possibly even illegal! So I would say that Invelos can most likely tell how many times Profiler has been opened around the world, but cannot tell whose Profiler it was. |

| Posted: | | | | The only thing I can think of is because of this part of the FAQ - Quote: Can I run DVD Profiler on more than one computer? For instance, on a home computer and a work computer. Answer: You can run DVD Profiler on as many computers as you like. If you have an Unlimited Registration key, you can enter it on more than one computer, as long as only one copy is run at a time. I'm not saying it is that, but by checking the times it's run, they can determine the same registration key is being used more than once. |

| Posted: | | | | Not knowing exactly how, and having just down loaded the B1227 update. As soon as it had finnished installing, and started to Run the first thing my Firewall did was ask me to give DVDP permission to a. access the local network, & b. ask for permission for DVDP to access the internet (at least my firewall is working ok. ). So I would assume from this, that DVDP access the Invelos server (at least) possibly to check to make sure it is up-to-date. This is something I don't mind it doing, as it saves me having to remember to check. Steve |

| Posted: | | | | It's very easy how this is done: A URL is called on start up: http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/CurVersion.aspx?Build=1227 If the Build parameter is set you get the beta if not: http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/CurVersion.aspx you get the final build number....

That was implemented in the 3.1 beta AFAIR. It was requested by the forum to be informed if a newer version was available. Since then the program (as many utilitiy programs I know) does a version check on startup. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online

| Posted: | | | | Just be thankful that it doesn't install a Service/Startup App that sits in the background before telling you there's an update like Adobe Reader/Quicktime and the like.
Not too bad in my opinion, to check when you start the program itself. As long as we know in advance and also a possibility to turn it off (with the command line/options). I presume this is more important for the Beta aspect since we may need the very latest version running to contribute successfully!
All fine in my book. |

I'm reminded of how in politics when a politician gives an answer to a question that doesn't suit the person who asked it -- and the questioner then claims the pol didn't answer him. Just because you don't like the answer you got, Terry, doesn't mean you didn't get an answer or that the answer you got wasn't right. | | | Another Ken (not Ken Cole) Badges? We ain't got no badges.
