Greetings:

Best way to ask this is through examples.

I get Wonderfalls.  Enter the UPC number.  It says, "Hey, there are child profiles.  Do you want to download them?"  And there was much rejoicing.

I get Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends.  Enter the UPC number.  Downloads the profile.  Doesn't download any childs, though.  I went and checked by title, and the child profiles were there.  So I downloaded them.

The question is what triggers the "Do you want to download the child profiles?" question when you add a title?  (I'm working on one these and I want to get it right for everyone.)

The child profiles need to be attached to the parent profile as box set contents.
If this connection hasn't been uploaded to the online database then the program won't know they exist.

Just to clarify what Giga says, if you're working on a TV series then on the parent profile the discs can be listed both in the disc info section and as box set contents.
If it's a movie boxset, then only as box set contents.

That rule really needs to be made one way or the other to avoid any kind of confusion or arguments/debates/etc...

there we differ in opinion:
if the TV series has no children then indeed as you say TV series do not require children. The moment you add children to a TV series profile the disc-id's should move from discs to the Box Set Contents, this is still by the rules as you don't remove the disc-id from the profile, you just move them to their correct location. (you made a Box of the TV series profile)

I don't use that feature, but you can't use a disc location when it's only in the Box Set section. And not every one is keen on using child profiles for TV shows.

It conflicts a little when it is in both places? And it needs to be in the Box Set Contents for the download feature to work? Perhaps local locking on disc-id's, as the disc-id's change by other released dvd's they still get overwritten otherwise? How do you handle a complete box like Stargate all seasons, does all the data of those seasons fit in one profile, all 10 seasons?

I've recently bought the US Buffy box and it asked me whether I wanted to download all 40 child profiles, too.

There's a topic about that topic around here somewhere (can't find it currently)

Edith: Found it.

Sorry, but that is not what the rules tell you to do.  The rules are quite specific.  When you create child profiles, and add them to the parent, you are NOT to remove anything from the parent profile.  When you 'move' the disc IDs you are, in fact, removing them from the disc ID field.  The fact that they are available in another location in the profile doesn't change that fact.

The reason the rules were written this way is so both sides, the 'use child profiles' and 'don't use child profiles', could have what they wanted.  The idea is for the person who downloads the parent to remove the portion that they don't use...full cast, full crew, disc IDs, Box Set contents, etc..  Removing anything from the parent profile eliminates that compromise.

No, why should it?

If we are talking about "Disc-ID" I think we should clearly distinguish between a Disc-ID added to a profile under the "Discs"-Section and the possibility to use a Disc-ID as the primary key in lieu of a UPC.
Although in both cases the same information is used, they indeed have nothing to do with each other. As a primary key it can be used only once (because it needs to be unique), as a Discs-Entry it could be used multiple time, just like e.g. the word "Hello" can exist in multiple Overviews.

e.g. (and yes, it's a Movie-Boxset so the rules are different, but this is just to show the possibilities) my Out of Sight / Intolerable Cruelty - Double Feature now has Disc-IDs in parent and in the childs, no problem at all:

Out of Sight / Intolerable Cruelty - Double Feature (UPC: 025195-023610)
contains Disc-IDs 693259B50B0A5383 and FE05AE3E4A55A6FE
and it is parent to I693259B50B0A5383 and IFE05AE3E4A55A6FE

Out of Sight (UPC: Disc ID: 6932-59B5-0B0A-5383)
contains DiscID 693259B50B0A5383

Intolerable Cruelty (UPC: Disc ID: FE05-AE3E-4A55-A6FE)
contains Disc-ID FE05AE3E4A55A6FE

Now, everybody has any information he needs, and if one wants to, he can delete any or all the Disc-IDs in the Discs-Section.

Of course. That is the link in the main database between a parent and it's childs.

Well, yes, you can no matter if there are Disc-IDs or not. You have to have "Discs" to use it, but those Discs don't need to have Disc-IDs.
