| Posted: | | | | I noticed that there are a couple of contributions for Criterion Collection titles that are moving Janus Films to the Media Companies field.
I have always been under the impression that Janus Films is a film distributor. It certainly must have been since it is 50 years old and operated long before home video came about. But I guess it could have moved into the media field as well...
What's your opinion? Should they be listed under studios, media companies (or not at all)? | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | Based on their website, they seem to be a Film distribution company. Just out of curiosit, how are they credited on the DVD? | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | The Third Man: 037429-141625 See also the long list of films they are offering in conjunction with Criterion. I'm at work but if memory serves it is usually just the logo/name at the front of the film. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | Like tweeter says, it's just a logo + name that comes after the Criterion logo and before the actual film. There's also the same logo on the back cover.
The contributions I noticed were the ones in their Monsters and Madmen boxset: The Haunted Strangler Corridors of Blood First Man into Space The Atomic Submarine
but like tweeter says, there are a whole bunch of Criterions that carry the Janus Films logo, and they all look the same, afaik. | | | My freeware tools for DVD Profiler users. Gunnar |

| Posted: | | | | Well, since they are celebrating their 50th year of distribution, I have a hard time believing they are a DVD Distribution company. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. | Posted: | | | | Agreed. Janus Films appears on some Criterion discs because they're the licensor of the movies, but they're not a DVD Media Company themselves. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |

| Posted: | | | | Strange, I just watched the Insomnia Criterion DVD last night. Janus Films appears in the opening credits of that film.
I would have to agree that they are a Film distributor, and not a Media Company. | | | Corey |

... Great film, much better than the US remake! And yes, Janus Films belongs in the studios list not the Media Companies list. pdf | | | Paul Francis San Juan Capistrano, CA, USA |

| Posted: | | | | Hmm ... but they do seem to be distributing some films in conjunction with Criterion. For example White Mane, The Red Balloon, a double feature of those two, and Paddle to the Sea. While those DVDs are advertised on Criterion's website, the actual DVDs themselves do not not have "The Criterion Collection" anywhere on the case. All of them do have "Janus Films" on the case however. So, in the case of those four at least, IMO, Janus Films is the distributor.
I don't have any of their Essential Art House brand releases, so I can't check those right now. I'll take a look the next time I drop in Borders, they always have some. | | | If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. -- Thorin Oakenshield |

They don't have to produce the movies to go in the Studio field. If they distributed the films, they still qualify as theatrical release studio. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I don't have any of their Essential Art House brand releases, so I can't check those right now. I'll take a look the next time I drop in Borders, they always have some. On that handful of titles you listed (Red Balloon, White Mane), it looks like Janus may actually qualify as the media company. The Essential Art House has the Criterion "C" logo on them (or at least the two volumes I saw at Best Buy the other day did) but they don't seem to be in "The Criterion Collection" per se so I'm not sure what to make of them. But for the standard Criterion Collection titles, Janus is definitely not a media company. | | | "This movie has warped my fragile little mind." |
