| Posted: | | | | I would be interested to see peoples opinions on how Hong King cinema actors names should be entered as a 'root' name in the database. If we had a name that was democratically selected and all other variations branched off from that - would that solve our current problem?
I have chosen 'Chow Yun Fat' for this poll as he is well-known around the world...
So, how would you enter 'Chow Yun Fat' into the database as a definitive way of representing him?

| Posted: | | | | The Rules are clear. Grey Hulk. There is NO such thing as a Community Name. We have two possibilities, the Credited As name for each film the actor appears in and beyond that the MOST COMMONLY Credited name, that is IT. there is NOTHING else. In most Hollywood films he is creditded as some variant of Chow Yun Fat (Chow Yun-Fat), Hong Kong films could be credited in an entirely different way. . But there is no COMMUNITY name. Just read the Rules and follow them.
What do you SEE On Screen, Grey. Typically Chow Yun Fat is what appears, for our purposes that becomes Chow/Yun/Fat, any other intrerpretation and many of my friends will be happy to argue it, results in a credit that appears DIFFERENTLY from what is On Screen. CHow/Yun/Fat, or perhaps Chow//Yun Fat.

| Posted: | | | | I would agree with that. However, the problem is: it could very well be that the largest number of credits for Asian actors is in Asian releases. And if there are only credits in an Asian language (and no credits subtitled in English or another Western language), what do you do? I'm unable to read Chinese (or Japanese or Korean or Thai or Singalese etc.), and somehow I suspect I'm not the only one... And even if I COULD read the credits, how could I possibly enter them or document them in my contribution notes? | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |

Chow Yun-Fat: 170 - 423
Guess my vote is: Chow Yun-Fat |

| Posted: | | | | Did you guys even read GreyHulk's post? He's not asking "how should you" according to the rules, he's asking "how would you" based on personal preference.
For myself, my personal stance has been to enter it as "Chow//Yun-Fat" - not exactly accurate but at least it means I don't have to use "credited as" on all his titles.
As for the idea of having a democratically chosen common name - it's an interesting idea. When this first started (before the CLT) we did mess around with trying to come up with guidelines on how to choose the best common name - a form of standardization, but it was forgotten about when Ken decided to go for most credited. Do be honest, the biggest stumbling block I see with choosing a common name that way is, would that mean we'd have to have a poll for every single common name decision? |

| Posted: | | | | For personal preferance I'd go with whatever he's credited as in the end credits. If that's not possible, I'd go with first name, middle name and last name. Actually I'd prefer to allways go with <Last name,/First name/Middle name> | | | Last edited: by Gemini76 |
