DVD Profiler forgets database path after Reboot

I'd like to change the database path, since I don't want it to be on the C partition. So, I created a new datatabase, restored the backup, made it the default database and removed the old database and the default path. I restarted DVD Profiler, and everything was fine.

However, after restarting the PC, all changes were gone. The database was set to the default path, and of course it was empty. I tried this at least 6 or 7 times, the software simply forgets the new settings. What's wrong? Do have to change anything else?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

The file that stores the database location is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\DVD Profiler\Databases.dod

Try to rename or delete that file. Reopen DVD Profiler and select the correct database.

Then reboot and check if that file is still there (it should be).

Hi,

thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't do the trick. After rebooting DVD Profiler changes Databases.dod to the default settings. Do I really have to keep the database information on my system partition?

Do you Invelos guys check the forums sometimes? The whole database dialogue is buggy like hell. Does anybody care about that?

Thanks again!

After the reboot: Is the file simply gone or has it actually changed? You can open it ith notepad. It looks a bit scrambly but you can see the database paths.

What OS are you running? XP/Vista/7?

Because the folder where the file is should be accessible by your user without problem (none of that shadow copy stuff Vista invented).

So if you close DVDP and the file is ok and reboot and the file is not OK before you open DVDP then something else screws your system up (some recovery tool or whatnot).

The file actually did change after restarting DVD Profiler. I'm running XP SP 2 with no recovery tools active. But it gets even more complicated: After I changed the path manually (in the Databases.dod file), DVD Profiler shows an error messages when starting. The message says something along the lines of: Some files are too old and not compatible with the newer version of DVD Profiler. However, after I copied the exact same database set to the default path, DVD Profiler starts with no problems at all.

I'm pretty sure that we have a bug here. I'm really sick and tired of software that clutters up the system partition. With 2000 titles in my collection, the database is easily 1 GB large. Why would I want that on my c: partion?

Thanks again for your help. It's very much appreciated!

So you want to completely ignore/forget about the default locations and, for instance, store everything in  "E:\Profiler Data\"

You created a new database, and in the process of creating it you chose the new path where you wanted it to be stored. You load the database and then restore the backup.  So far I assume these are the steps you have taken so far.

Have you yet tried adjusting the default folders within DVDP itself? Go to:

    Options -> File Folders

There is the list of folders which likely all read

    C:\Documents and Settings\%USERNAME%\My Documents\DVD Profiler\[Folder Name]

Where "Folder Name" is that for each piece of data (Layouts, Reports, Translations, et al) Change the initial path for all of these to the location of where you want the database data to stay (such as "E:\Profiler Data\" in my example)
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

Yup, I did change the paths to the data folders, BUT the path to my database was originally a little bit different.

For the data folders the path is: E:\DVD Profiler\Layouts etc.

And for the database the path was E:\DVD Profiler\Database\Databases\Default etc.

So I changed that to E:\DVD Profiler\Databases\Default, and everything seems to work fine now. This is by no means intuitive, and it doesn't make any sense at all, since the default path settings put the database folder even on a different partition. So, why on earth, was THAT a problem?

The invelos folks suspected my virus scanner to be the problem. Well, nice try, but I have hundreds of programs installed on my machine and NEVER has the scanner made any problems.

This is a bug in DVD Profiler. We know that the "Open Database" dialog does not work if you want to select the destination folder from the folder tree selection box: "Open Databse > New Database..." You have to copy and paste the path manually. Probably both problems are caused by the same bug.

That may be so, but I tried to recreate it and failed. I, too, have the database on a different partition (both on an XP system and a W7) and on both machines I deleted the DOD file and reassigned DVDP to my actual database. It worked on both machines without a glitch.

Well, the Lord moves in mysterious ways. These "solutions" are not quite satisfying. Could be some messed up registry entries of an older program version. And sometimes it's just an unique combination of OS, installed software and hardware that might cause the problem.

Thanks again for your time and valuable input. Very much appreciated!

Do you know Sam Tyler: "Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet." DVD Profiler again changed the settings to default. Don't tell me, it's my virus scanner. The scanner might prevent (!) files from getting overwritten by other programs, but the scanner itself does not change those files.

Well, I give up! I'll keep my database on the c partition. I'm sick and tired of this crap. The Invelos guys told me they hadn't any other reports about similar problems. Fair enough!

one last thing you could try - change it the way you want and then write protect the DOD file. Then see if a program complains about not being able to write to it?

Like others, I've got my database on another partition so it does work normally.

Looks like all the regular options have already been covered... so...

Also worth noting: you can shift the entire location of My Documents (and by default also your Profiler data) as a whole to a custom location: right click on it and select Properties > Move.
This has an advantage of never having to worry about most programs writing to My Docs then residing on your system partition.
See also: How to Change the Default Location of the My Documents Folder

It shouldn't be necessary to go this far just to shift the Profiler data, but if you're looking to keep as much of your user data off C: partition anyway...

Great idea! I didn't know this tweak. As you said: I want to keep as much data as possible off my system partition. I tried it and everything looks fine. The database settings in DVD Profiler changed to the new location.

Thanks again for your help.

Doesn't solve the issue,so jurassic that's two people who know dvd profiler has a bug & a bloody huge one,i wonder why the line that needs to be changed isn't stored in the registry like the others are, moving my docs is not a fix & in my case not practical, anyway i'm tired now i'll have another go tommorrow to see if i can get it to work & if not i'll have to make some noise, even new data base creation wants it in my docs lol  otherwise i get an error message
